about

Here is our new track HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO BE A MOTHER, recorded with Shane Nicholson under the gumtrees on the central coast on Mother's Day 2021.

The first track from three single release Open Heart Sessions, this first one written by Melanie Horsnell. Melanie says “I wrote it a week before mother’s day, Robyn and Kate had written two beautiful songs for our project and I was sweeping up at work thinking about songs and mothering and a little overwhelmed by it all when the line “How Am I Supposed To Be A Mother” came to mind, in despair and also in a longing to be a really good one. It’s difficult to describe as it’s all in the lyric, but it all came out by candlelight at the kitchen table that night - firstly all the worries one has, and then the beautiful things our children say to us when we really feel like giving up hope.”

Thanks also to Johanna and Gav who lent us the beautiful house in Peats Ridge to rehearse in and that opens the film.
Enjoy!

lyrics

How’m I supposed to be a mother,
When I’m just trying to get by?
Just trying to get enough work
Just trying to make a good life

How’m I supposed to be a mother
When I have to sell my time
I want to see their growing faces
I want to hear their changing minds

Hard work
Soul hurts
No help
Just hide

How’m I supposed to be a mother
When I can’t even provide
Two incomes on the table
When I only earn less than half

And there’s all these expectations
Wearing my heart down
How am I supposed to be a mother
When I’m worn down to the ground

Hard work
Soul hurts
No help
Just hide

Breathe deep
Slowly
We will survive

And you don’t think
You can say anything
You keep it inside
Cause nobody talks about difficult things
Pretend it’s just fine

And they say “don’t worry Mama
We really do like toast
You cut it up nice like soldiers
Dipped in egg we like the most

You take us to the beach
Jump on the trampoline
And your the only grown up
Who joins us on the swing
We love you mum cause you are everything”

Hard work
Soul hurts
No help
Just hide

Breathe deep
Slowly
We will survive

Hard work
Soul hurts
Sometimes I cry

Breathe deep
Slowly
We’ll be alright

I’m supposed to be your Mama
Even on my own
We can make it work together
We’ll be fine

They weave tales of farmers, hippies, mothers, sea farers, history, lovers, the ordinary, and the mysterious.
