about

Our second release from the “Open Heart Sessions’ trilogy, is ‘Small Town’. Written by Robyn Martin, the song draws on the landscape and imagery of the remote coastal town of Ceduna SA where she grew up.

It depicts the struggle to find one’s identity in a place where everybody
knows you and facing the expectations that people might have about who you are. The song is a celebration of small communities, of history and family ties that anchor you to a place. And a celebration of accepting ourselves and each other for who we are and expanding ourselves. beyond perceived boundaries.

lyrics

Small Town

There’s not much here that happens and when it does everybody knows
I practised double clutching, on these big old wide dirt roads
And we’d look for love and a villies pie at the footy on a Saturday
Muckin’ round searching for
myself and they’d call me by my Daddy’s name

This small town has its secrets
This small town doesn’t change real fast
Is this small town big enough to hold me, if I show my cards?
This small town’s full of dust and dirt
But this small town has a big old
sky

Is this small town big enough to hold me
When I’m ready to fly?
Is this small town big enough to hold me
When I’m ready to fly?
In year 8 art I painted the desert pea on a stobie pole
And my netball team’s still up there, in spray paint on the silo
I was taught perspective with a flat horizon and a straight road
There’s some can’t wait to leave here and there are some who will never go

CHORUS

I’ve hung around enough to know, not everybody fits the mould
I wouldn’t say I’m a brave girl, I’m good at do
ing what I’m told
But I held her hand and we jumped from the jetty and I shimmered like the heat haze
And I wondered did she notice and what would everybody say?
